On Monday, the Help association from Split visited our school and held two workshops on the topic of “Sexually transmitted diseases”.
The workshops for the students of classes 2.a and 1.a were led by Diana Nonković, MSc, MD, specialist in epidemiology from the Institute of Public Health of Split-Dalmatia County and an associate of Help. She was accompanied by peer educators – volunteers of the Help association, all of them grammar school students: Filomena, Klaudija and Ivan.
The aim of the workshops was to point out the consequences arising from engaging in sexual relations, namely the numerous sexually transmitted diseases that occur among young people in Croatia and worldwide. We heard that the most common today is HPV infection, which scientists link to the development of cervical cancer, as well as about numerous other sexually transmitted diseases and the prejudices surrounding people suffering from the most dangerous sexually transmitted disease of today, AIDS.
The long-term goal of informing and passing knowledge on to young people through these and similar workshops is to protect and preserve reproductive health in later life.
