Students of classes 1.a and 1.b, together with teachers Marina Marović and Ivana Spahija, visited the Antonica’s Mill picnic site on the Žrnovnica River as part of a field trip for the subject Knowledge of Goods and Nutrition.
Flour at Antonica’s Mill has been milled in the same way for 800 years now, and it is the last such mill, while the Žrnovnica River itself got its name from the millstones, that is, the watermills. In the mill, rye, wheat and corn are milled, and in this way flours are obtained that are not chemically treated and contain no additives whatsoever.
Our hosts welcomed us warmly and told us many interesting facts about the mill itself, as well as about Croatian mythology. We learned that the flour we see in stores is white in colour because it is made from the core of the grain, gluten, the glue that makes it possible to make bread, while whole-grain wheat flour is brown in colour and contains all the characteristics of the grain itself. After the interesting lecture, we ourselves set about making our own whole-grain bread. There were various shapes of bread, and which shape is best, judge for yourself.
After the workshop, the students relaxed on the meadow by the river playing badminton and table football, while the most persistent and daring earned free pancakes by competing in sack jumping. The field trip was thus brought to a cheerful conclusion, and another interesting fact our hosts revealed to us is that one of the scenes of the popular series Game of Thrones was filmed by the river next to the mill, and that the series’ actors were also delighted by the setting and the mill itself.
