We are pleased to present the “Financial Literacy” project, in which students of classes 2.b and 4.b (THK programme) of our school took part together with Anita Perkov Kalebota, teacher of the economics group of subjects, as well as students of the Anton Štifanić Tourism and Hospitality School from Poreč together with teachers Lidija Čargonja, Josip Klarić and Milena Rafaelić.
The aim of the project is to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to make financial decisions in everyday situations. By acquiring financial literacy skills and knowledge, they would avoid the risks of making poor financial decisions and thereby ensure a better financial future.
In a study on the level of economic literacy (Japelli, 2010) conducted in 55 countries, Croatia ranked very low, in 51st place (only Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and South Africa rank below it). The results of a doctoral study on the level of financial literacy and success in managing personal finances (Cvrlje, 2014) indicated that over 40% of respondents in Croatia are completely illiterate or illiterate, with a large percentage being young people.
Our students Roko Kraljević, Paula Kraljević and Nikolina Blahut (students of class 2.b) and students Karla Ponoš, Renato Marić-Banje, Ivan Bučević and Niki Petrinović (students of class 4.b) gave a presentation via Skype. The presentation explained basic financial concepts, the development of money, accounts and cards, the risks of taking out loans, and the operation of a currency exchange office, and the students used concrete tasks to explain how to spend rationally and how to save.
This is not the first time our students have taken part in such a project. In April 2018, students Nikolina Blahut, Roko Kraljević, Paula Kraljević, Marijeta Biluš and Irena Mihovilović took part in the “European Money Quiz” financial literacy competition organised by the Croatian Banking Association, and they took first place in Split-Dalmatia County. Out of more than 200 registered schools from across the Republic of Croatia, our students took 41st place and had all twelve tasks solved correctly, which makes us proud.
